    - KENNY ROBERTS
    . AMA GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPION
    Kenny Roberts is 135
    pounds of nerve and gristle.
    At twenty-one, he’s the new
    AMA Grand National Cham-
pion, a title he won by amass-
    ing an incredible 2,014 points
    in competition against the best
    professional motorcycle riders
in America. (No one else was
    even close.)
    Here’s something odd:
Kenny racked up a lot of those
    points in road races- races
    where he rode a 350ccYamaha
twin against a field of 750cc
    "superbikes.”
That sounds like a mismatch. And it was.
F'or while a few of the superbikes had a slight
edge in speed, Kenny’s Yamaha had a huge edge
in handling. And reliability. As Kenny says,"It’s not
    that Yamaha has more horsepower than anyone;
we just run consistently and keep on running.
Our 350’s are fast enough to keep up with the .
big bikes, and in some of the longer races, we
just ran them into the ground)’
In fact, the more brutal the race, the better
theYamahas liked it. In the grueling 200 milers
    at Daytona and Talladega,they
    swept the first three places.
    Yamaha reliability also
    accounts for another of Kenny
    Roberts’ remarkable achieve-
    ments: Of the twenty-three
    AMA Nationals he entered, he
scored points in all but three.
    You’re not supposed to be
    able to dothat.
    Reliability.Think about it
    when you’re thinking about
    buying a new motorcycle.
Because we use the same care
in building all Yamahas as we
    use in building Kenny’s bikes.
And the same parts. For example, Kenny’s road
racer and our RD350 street bike share virtually
the same frame, transmission and engine designs.
And while Kenny Roberts may be the best motor-
cycle rider in America, he's certainly not the
    gentlest. When we’ve
    got bikes Kenny can’t
    break, we think we’ve
    got bikes that are darn
    near unbreakable.
    Someday,
    you’ll own a Yamaha.
