Every day Yoshi Iwai decides how many
Viragos we’ll make.
In the entire world, there
are only four people who do
what Yoshi Iwai does.These
specially trained craftsmen,
each with 10 to 15 years expe-
rience, paint the fuel tanks of
the Yamaha Virago 1100.
One at a time. By hand.
It’s the kind of job that effi-
ciency experts frown on, but
it’s the only way to achieve the
unique beauty of a custom
shaded paint job. It’s also only
one of nine steps in the paint-
ing process each tank requires.
And we’re as fussy about
the rest of the motorcycle as
we are about the tank. In fact,
we dip-paint the frame before
carefully airbrushing it. Which
is why the Virago’s entire frame
is coated inside and out, in-
stead of just the parts you see.
There are certainly cheaper
ways to paint a motorcycle. But
although we know the value
of a dollar, we also know the
value of quality workmanship
and attention to every detail.
So as long as we keep mak-
ing Viragos, well paint diem
the way we do. Well lavish them
with chrome. And well even
double-check the stitching in
the luxurious loose-cushioned
split seat.
But while we created the
Virago to be the world’s finest
looking motorcycle, we’ve never
forgotten it’s made to be ridden.
Which is why the air-cooled
V-twin engine is not only an
integral part of the Virago’s
appearance, it’s also a master-
piece of engineering. Finely
honed to extract the optimum
blend of power and torque from
its two massive cylinders.
Cylinders that are slightly
offset for better cooling. And
precisely positioned so that,
together with a unique firing
order, they eliminate vibration
without the need for additional
balancers and all the weight
that goes along with them.
Those chrome barrel
shocks not only look
terrific, they do a very
effective job of cover-
ing for roads that aren’t.
The slots in the disc
brakes not only look
sporty, they dissipate heat
more quickly to help main-
tain plenty of stopping power.
And the clean, uncluttered
instrumentation is mounted
in brilliantly chromed pods.
Which means they’re not only
easy to read, but
they’re also easy
to look at.

want a bike to be smaller. But
not wimpier.
Of course, there are busi-
nessmen who probably think
we’re wasting our time sweat-
ing the details the way we do.
But we must be doing
something right.
After all, we’re selling
Viragos as fast as Yoshi Iwai
can paint them.
